Minimizing Text Message Usage Due to New Regulations and Fees

In the light of recent changes in business SMS regulations in the United States, we have decided to minimize our use of text messages as a means of communication with our customers. The new regulations, which are industry-wide and facilitated by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) and communication platforms like Twilio, primarily target Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging, however are affecting rates for Person to Person (P2P).

A2P messaging is typically used by businesses and organizations to send mass messages to customers or users, and these recent changes require businesses to register who they are and what types of messages they are sending. Furthermore, they necessitate obtaining explicit consent from the audience for each of the campaign use cases for which businesses are sending messages. Unfortunately. many vendors are grouping P2P in with this and this affects those businesses not using their business lines for A2P.

While these measures are designed to enhance transparency and trust in the messaging ecosystem, they also involve additional costs and compliance obligations. For registered numbers, there is an additional one-time registration fee, a monthly campaign cost that depends on the use case, and a per message fee that varies by carrier.

In consideration of these new requirements, we have decided to focus more on communication via email, as it is a more cost-effective and less regulated medium.

However, we also understand the convenience and immediacy of text messages. Therefore, in the event that we do send you important updates via SMS, we may need to pass on some of the associated costs. We believe this approach will allow us to maintain effective, immediate communication when necessary, while also respecting the new industry guidelines and managing our costs effectively.

We thank you for your understanding in this matter and want to assure you that our commitment to maintaining open and transparent communication with you remains unwavering. Our aim is to navigate these changes in a way that respects both our need to comply with the new regulations and your need to receive timely and relevant information.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us. We appreciate your continued support and loyalty.
